Messina has very resilient people as they have had many earthquakes including an earthquake and tsunami in 1908 which killed approximately 100,00 people! They were bombed heavily in WWII, but they have rebuilt in such a way that you would not have realized how devastated it was.
Check back on our blog to December 5 of 2023 to read about our first visit to Messina where we booked an excursion to Mount Etna, an active volcano. Today we decided to see some things that we didn’t see last time, so we went for a walk.

We found a few fishing stores and a thrift store where I found an Italian -made Christmas ornament. We happened upon a post office, so I went through the process of buying stamps. You have to go to a kiosk and input information and it spits out a ticket number for the queue. I waited for quite a while, and finally got my stamps. Mission accomplished!! The postman was very pleasant!😊 He even put the stamps on for me!
We hiked up to the Temple of Christ the King where we had a panoramic view of the city.

On the way back down, we found a parrot in a cage at an outdoor café.

At 12 noon every day the Cathedral clock tower has about an 11 minute show, and thousands of people show up to watch it.
This lion also moves and roars. Google the Messina Clock Tower to see the full performance!

I took time to look through the cathedral before noon. It has had quite a history! Several earthquakes have damaged it, and it sustained much damage in WW II.

It has one of the largest pipe organs in the world with almost 16,000 pipes! Google it to listen to an organ performance if you are interested.
There were several statues depicting various Biblical people.

After the noon clock tower exhibit, we headed back to Ragusa, the shop where we had eaten the most delicious cannoli two years ago. 😊

There was some hot tubbing and napping this afternoon.
On to Naples!!
