Salerno, Italy

It is a sunny but cool day in Salerno.

Port of Salerno

Today we decided to wander, and we had a few destinations in mind. We have almost walked 20,000 steps so far, and we have not made it back to the ship yet.

We were able to find a fishing store and a thrift store that Gary and I had tried to map out ahead of time since we have no data on our phones. The map that we were given at the info booth was quite useless as it did not contain many street names (all in Italian anyway). Street signs are also few and far between.

We happened upon the local market which sold everything from fish to underwear.

Many fresh fruits and vegetables
Some type of tiny shellfish
Flowers, too!

Our next destination was Cathedral of St Matthew . It was very difficult to find, even with asking the locals for help.

I got a bit weary along the way and we stopped for a pastry which is famous in this area.

Sfogliatella: crispy phyllo pastry stuffed with orange flavoured sweetened ricotta cheese

We finally found The Duomo of Salerno (St Matthew’s cathedral). Work started on this church in 1076 AD, the year the Normans conquered Salerno.

Main area

The main part of the church had some plastic chairs set up for services, but the crypt of Saint Matthew was the highlight. Supposedly he and other saints are buried downstairs.

The artwork was incredible! The patterns were made of cut stone.

Painted ceilings

Gary had found a place with Wifi, so I joined him after my tour of the church.

Relaxing

We headed back to the ship and found a few monstrous doors on the way.

Metal door with artwork
This one had a cute little door cut into it for easier access.

Tonight we head back to Rome, and we will start the next 14 day segment of our cruise.

Stay tuned!!
