Athens

November 26/23

Our voyage from Katakolon to Athens was a bit rough as the winds were about 50 knots per hour which is about 100 km/hr. We had a good ten and a half hour sleep, though!

As a result of the wind, the port at Athens was closed. We waited for a few hours to see if we would make it to shore or not. Finally the port opened up, and we were off the ship by about 11.

We walked in a downpour to the nearest Metro (subway) station and took the train into Athens. After blindly hiking our way up to the Acropolis we enjoyed the view. A Rick Steve’s Travel Podcast was our tour guide. The Acropolis is the top of a hill where various temples were built over various stages of time. The Parthenon served as a Christian church for about a thousand years before the Turks turned it into a mosque. Eventually it was blown up during a war.

On Mars Hill

The Apostle Paul spoke to the people of Athens as told in Acts 17, and Mars Hill may have been the site of his famous sermon.

Alas, because of our shortened day we couldn’t see everything, but we stopped by the Attika bakery for delicious baklava, a cappuccino, and Wifi on our walk back to the ship.

Excellent Baklava

Hopefully Ephesus tomorrow!!
