Grand Turk

Written by:

Gary and I have never been to Turks and Caicos before, so I had to do a bit of research for our arrival on February 21st.

According to Wikipedia: “The name Caico[s] is from the Lucayan caya hico, meaning ‘string of islands’. The Turks Islands are named after the Turk’s cap cactus, Melocactus intortus, whose red cephalium resembles the fez hat worn by Turkish men in the late Ottoman Empire.”

Wikipedia continues: “In 1917, Canadian Prime Minister Robert Borden suggested that the Turks and Caicos join Canada, but this suggestion was rejected by British Prime Minister David Lloyd George and the islands remained a dependency of Jamaica.”

(I want to yell BOO!! at this point, but that would be rude).

Sigh! What could have been!! Perhaps someday a tropical country will choose to be a part of our great nation!! It is presently a British overseas territory.

One of my favorite things to do while on vacation is to walk along the beach with my honey, looking for beach glass or tiny treasures. Gary often takes photos, and he caught me beachcombing in this shot.

I found a sand dollar that was still alive, so I put her back where she belonged after admiring her. Look at the intricate design! God cares about details!!

We left a trail of footprints in the sand. I must say that the weather was typically around 28 degrees for much of our trip.

Notice the view of Grand Turk from our balcony. The island is seven miles long and one and a half miles wide with a population of just under 5000 people.

After a wonderful day, we enjoyed another gala night. Here is our shrimp cocktail.

Gary chose a delicious rockfish and shrimp dish for supper. I chose a scrumptious beet salad, scallops, and then a wonderful warm flourless chocolate cake for dessert.

The ship’s photographer took a picture to help us remember our lovely evening.
