A Three Island Tour

Written by:

Gary and I started singing the theme song from Gilligan’s island but changed it from “a three hour tour” to ” a three island tour”. Both girls looked at us and said “we don’t know that song”. We were sad. 😞

Today we booked a three island tour from the train station in Venice. The first island was Murano, known for its glass blowing trade. We were able to watch a demonstration and then wandered through the gift shop. Tourism is the main economy in Italy, but I’m not sure I would want hundreds of tourists invading my tiny island every day, especially on wash day!

Our next stop was Burano, known for the lace-making trade which is now outsourced to China. They also make a certain kind of cookie which we sampled, and they are known for the local fishermen and their brightly coloured homes.

Torcello has only a handful of inhabitants along with feral cats. Although we searched, we could not spot a cat, but we enjoyed the scenery including an old church.

Back at St Mark’s square in Venice, we did a bit of souvenir shopping and then did one of my favourite things, walking the back streets. I loved the architecture and colours of all of the buildings.

We sampled more gelato in our way to finding a boat building yard and enjoyed the sunset along the way.

Supper at Al Cugnai, a restaurant recommended by Frommer’s guidebook, did not disappoint!

We found our way back to the hotel after another great day in Venice!!
