Day 20 Wednesday February 5, 2014

We saw the sunrise this morning. We were at the bus stop at 0640 waiting our pickup for a trip to Milford Sound. Gary and Penelope got the day off, and we enjoyed being chauffeured in the tour bus by an excellent driver and commentator.

We saw thousands of sheep today along with cattle and deer which they raise on farms. The deer are released into the wild during hunting season so that hunters have game to shoot. If Milford Sound were in the northern hemisphere, it would be at the same latitude as Portland, Oregon. We had a four hour trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound, and then we were given a picnic lunch as we boarded a boat for a two hour cruise.

The day started overcast with a hint of rain, but by the time we got to our destination, it was beautiful. This waterfall is three times the height of Niagara Falls:

I was pleased that I did not get sea sick, so I was able to enjoy the spectacular scenery. 🙂

The boat was filled with people speaking many different languages. In fact, we have met very few Canadians down here. There are many people from China and Europe. One of our fellow passengers snapped this shot of us today:

We reboarded our bus and snoozed on our return trip. I just can’t seem to stay awake on these New Zealand roads. Good thing I was not driving, although I did give it a go yesterday. It was a challenge, and yes, I did turn on the wipers when I tried to signal.

We enjoyed a nice supper and are getting ready to check out tomorrow as we start our flight to Fiji in the evening.
