What’s that smell?

Day 13 continues…

From Hobbiton we continued on to Rotarua. At first, I thought that the vehicle in front of us was emitting some odorous emissions, but then I realized that it is the smell of the sulphur in this geothermal area. We checked into our hotel, the Rydges at Rotarua, and found a beautiful room with a 12 foot ceiling and a private spa tub. We had just enough time to book a Maori Hangi for tonight (Maori version of a luau).

A bus came to the hotel and took us to the Mitai Maori Village for the evening. We were seated with 8 other guests: 2 from Scotland, 2 from England, and 4 from Germany. We were the only Canadians at the feast with 150 others. We shared a wonderful evening enjoying the Maori performance, hiking through the forest to see bubbling pools and glow worms at night, and, of course, eating a delicious feast.
