Montenegro

Written by:

Early this morning our ship wound its way through the only Fjord in the Mediterranean on its way to Kotor, Montenegro. It had been added to the list of 25 most beautiful bays in the world in July 2000.

Stunning waters

Montenegro has been under the rule of various conquerors over time and had been part of the former Yugoslavia, but it finally became independent in 2006 when it separated from Serbia.

Since there is only room for one ship in port, we had to be tendered in by local water taxi or on our own lifeboat. Viking cruise ship got here ahead of us and took the only spot!😂

Church along the coastline.

The lineup to go ashore was very long, so Gary and I went to the spa, did some reading in the Crows-nest lounge on deck 12, had lunch, and finally headed ashore after 12.

Steps up to the Fortress

We hiked partway up the mountain, and then spent some time wandering through the old medieval town.

Tower along the way
Did some shopping here
They love their cats

In fact, they had a cat museum which we did not go to, and there are cats everywhere. However, one does have to watch where you walk.

Wall and moat

This is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and these walls were built by the Venetians in the 1500s. There is actually a moat next to the wall.

Streets with large paving stones

After enjoying some gelato, looking at a few churches, shopping, and walking to the beach, we got back on the lifeboat and headed back to the ship. It was a lovely warm fall day.
