Aruba is a dry and sunny island, and because it is so close to mainland South America, it is just out of reach of the wrath of Caribbean hurricanes. Oranjestad is the capital with just over 100,000 people. We took the time to shop and explore this beautiful island as well.

Oranjestad is home to many painted horses. They are a tribute to the history of the people of Aruba selling horses to Europeans in days gone by.

I love seeing God’s splendid creatures!

We shared the port with another ship today.
We headed back on board to enjoy the lovely sunshine and great food. We were treated to a history lesson this evening on the main stage called “Origin”. It told the story of the Holland America company complete with narration and images on the 270 degree LED mega screen.
The first Nieuw Amsterdam ship (1905-1931) was refitted in 1925 for the purpose of bringing immigrants to North America in an affordable and comfortable style instead of being treated like lesser class citizens. How exciting it was to learn about this ship since this was the ship that my grandparents came to Canada on in 1927! They arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax and started a new life as homesteaders in the Swan River Valley in Manitoba. Thanks to their courage and God’s grace, 95 years later we had the privilege of sailing on another Holland America vessel!
