Cartagena, Columbia January 14

Written by:

We passed through the canal peacefully and headed to Columbia. Here I will quote from the captain’s log from January 14th: “After a very rough night we arrived safely in Cartagena”. That is an understatement!🤢. With strong winds and waves up to 20 feet high, the ship stabilizers were working steadily to keep us somewhat upright. Our room was close to the stabilizers near the front of the ship, so it was a bit of a noisy night with stabilizer noise and the crash of the waves at the bow. Some of our group ended up staying awake in public areas or watched movies in their rooms for a while since sleep was difficult. Gary and I evidently slept through most of the turmoil similar to what Jesus did on the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 8:23-27)😅

As a result of the wind, we were late getting into port. We still managed to meet our tour guide, JC, and our driver, Jack with enough time to do a tour of this gorgeous city.

We booked through Dora the Explorer at http://cartagenatour.com/. JC’s English was excellent, having taught Spanish in North Carolina for many years.

We started by driving up to La Popa Monastery which was built in the 17th century

The views were stunning.

Gary found a few flowers on the monastery grounds.

Down the hill we went to the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, a fortress built by the Spanish for protection from pirates who wanted to steal their gold.

It was time for some retail therapy, so JC took us to the Las Bovedas, former military dungeons which are now gift shops.

A local street vendor sold some delicious fresh mango.

The old city with its ancient walls and unique architecture lured us in.

There was more shopping involved.

Along with some photo opportunities

We also had a tour of an emerald museum as well as the San Pedro Claver church

Back at the port, we were treated to a free mini zoo and botanical garden which we had to walk through while going to and from the ship. While I browsed in the gift shop, Gary took a few photos.

Is not God a great artist?

Snuggled in

Toucan

Anteater

Flamingoes

We had a beautiful day!
