San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua

After another day at sea, we arrived in Nicaragua on Thursday, January 9. We have been enjoying our days at sea, eating delicious food, taking in lectures on various ports of call, singing in a pop choir, visiting with friends, using the gym (Gary 😁), and enjoying the seemingly endless sea….

At this port, we needed to take a water shuttle to the pier because the ship is too large to come alongside land.

The crew lowered our orange lifeboats and took us ashore to the sounds and sights of local music and dancing.

We hired a local driver to take us on a tour of the area.

Thankfully, we had an air conditioned van!

Our non-English speaking driver took us to Rivas, a city built in the 1500’s. This Catholic Church was built in 1607 and had beautiful wood work on the inside.

After some refreshments to counteract the 30 degree heat and humidity, we shopped in the open market.

A visit to Lake Nicaragua was next. At an area of 8264 square km, it is the largest lake in Central America and 10th largest in the Americas. Volcanoes can be seen in the distance, and we had persistent vendors trying to sell their wares.

Our last stop was at a 134 meter statue of Jesus called “Christ of the Mercy”. It was set high on the sea wall, and the views from there were stunning.

We had a great opportunity to get a group shot.

It was time to head back to the ship, but we saw some neat examples of God’s creation along the way.

Green bug

Lost crab? We found this up by the statue.

Ok, he was just so cute!

We took lifeboat back to the ship after a bit of souvenir shopping. 😁
