Madeira is a gorgeous island discovered in 1419 by the Portuguese. It was a 15th century “gas station” for ships heading to the new world. With a population of about 150,000, today it has modern shops and quaint shops along narrow cobblestone streets . The island is a “dormant” volcano, and is comparable to the big island of Hawaii.
Gary and I are wandering the streets of Funchal, presently enjoying free city wifi along with our gelato and Americano coffee.

I am enjoying the many painted doors in this city..

The streets are decorated for Christmas, and stores are advertising Black Friday specials.

The city is very walkable, and we enjoyed a stroll along the water.

This afternoon we head back out to sea. Our destination is Ponta Del Gada in the Azores where we should arrive on Friday.
Happy American Thanksgiving to my American family and friends!
