Thursday January 29.
The most common mode of transportation here is the pedal bicycle. I have seen mothers juggling a sleeping toddler along with groceries, and I have seen young children pedaling with sleeping siblings somehow balanced as they ride along. This bike belongs to Peter, Gary’s fishing friend.
This morning Gary headed to the marina and went fishing with Luckie of Happy Go Luckie Tours. The excursion was four hours, and they fished beyond the reef which was 14 miles offshore. The choppy water didn’t dampen their fishing efforts and they came home with four fish: a cow head porgy, a snapper, a mackerel, and a barracuda. I had a quiet morning on my own, and Gary returned shortly after 1:00 pm with fish fillets in a bag of ice. We enjoyed delicious pan fried fish with fresh fruit, and then we spent some time lounging in the hammocks in the back yard.
This afternoon I went back to the fishing hole with Gary.
The breeze was enough to keep the bugs away from my white skin and I managed to catch a jack fish and two crabs! We made it back to the house in time to catch the sunset from the rooftop!
For supper we went back to the Driftwood Cafe for their specialty: pizza! Their homemade crust recipe has its roots in Lousiana, and it was hot and tasty! On our walk home, we happened upon an American who told us that he couldn’t afford to live in the States on his pension, so he sold everything and moved here where he can live debt free! It wouldn’t be such a bad place to retire to!
