Antelope Falls

Tuesday January 27

I slept better last night as Hector kept the noise level down (see yesterday’s post if you are confused).

We wandered downtown this morning and ate breakfast at a Mayan restaurant. There was one thing on the menu: deep fried jack (tortillas) served with scrambled eggs, bacon, and refried beans. The tortillas were delicious…like fried dough but so soft and puffy. We dipped ours in sugar! 🙂

A visit to the fruit stand was next and we stocked up again: 14 bananas for one American dollar.

Today we ventured out on a hike in the Mayflower Bocawina National park. We are hoping to hike the Inca trail in 2016, so this gave us an idea of what it might be like. Our 2.9 km hike to Antelope falls was considered moderate to difficult.

There were 465 man made stairs created to help us through the steeper parts, along with many sections with ropes to assist in the steep ascent.

I even pseudo- repelled down one section. I am standing near the top of this photo, and it gives an idea of how steep it is.

Gary enjoyed taking many photos, and we enjoyed a rest at the swimming pool near the top of the falls.

The weather was great and the foliage was beautiful.

It took 2 3/4 hours, and my legs were quivering like Wile E. Coyote on earthquake pills after the descent.

After a quick stop back at our place when we got back to town, we loaded the car with fishing gear and headed back to our spot at the lagoon. There were a few others locals there tonight, and we even landed a Caribbean jack fish (way smaller and cuter than our Canadian ones). We gave it to one of the other fisherman. We enjoyed porkchops at Miss Marva’s tonight and even listened to some local drumming at the Driftwood Cafe. All in all, it was a great day!
