Driving in the outback

This morning started early: 4:45. We caught our flight from Sydney to Brisbane to Gladstone. Originally, we had planned to spend two days on Heron Island, but they notified us of an unfortunate fire which shut the island down, so we had to make alternate plans. We ended up renting a Mitsubishi Outlander and Gary bravely started driving on the left hand side of the road. We arrived at Agnes Water Beach and enjoyed a delicious lunch while enjoying 35 degree weather and ocean breezes.

We continued on to Bundaberg where we checked into our hotel for two nights. Our drive today started out in cattle country, but by the time we arrived in Bundaberg, the area had become more of a farming/orchard area. We think we may have seen a few of these at the side of the road today, but they were not moving!!

Our quest for finding ice cream was completed today! We went to the Aussie version of Cold Stone Creamery: it is called Cold Rock. I enjoyed mango and strawberry sorbet, Gary Baileys and Coffee ice cream, and Laura lime ice cream with sour gummy worms.

We were wondering how well we would understand people with their Aussie accents, but evidently, we are difficult to understand as well. I have had several people misunderstand what I have asked, and today was a good example. When we rented our vehicle, I asked if we were able to have two drivers on the rental contract. The lovely young lady got a confused look on her face and responded, no, there is only one steering wheel. We all burst into laughter!! She gave us a great vehicle with this license plate:

Proverbs 6 speaks of the hardworking ants, which we saw many of today as we went for a walk down by the river:

“6 Go to the ant, O sluggard;
consider her ways, and be wise.
7 Without having any chief,
officer, or ruler,
8 she prepares her bread in summer
and gathers her food in harvest.” ESV Bible
